UnbeLEAFable Altered Mixed Media Tag for Fall

Are you a leaf peeper? If the gorgeous firey hues of fall set your heart pitter-pattering, then you are going to LOVE this project! It’s one of my recent favorites that helped re-ignite my love for mixed media. The good news is that it’s pretty timeless, so you can be sure that I’ll be sharing it again next fall to remind you to make one!

keep versafine clair vibrant

Just like the Day of the Dead tag, this project used all sorts of mediums. I focused on Versafine Clair because I just love the vibrancy of the colors and knew that they would blend perfectly for my fall leaves. The problem was blending on chipboard, and getting a vibrant color. In comes Staz-On Pigment in Snowflake. It creates the perfect white base on the chipboard leaves that doesn’t react with the VersaColor. It was as if the chipboard was white, not brown. Perfect!

project highlights

Two elements that I really love in this project are the copper patina leaf and the creative medium on the tuille. They are both absolutely stunning and add sooooo much interest, texture and visual complexity to the project. BUT, they’re super easy to create!

All sorts of little touches pull the project together – from the iridescent embossing on the colored leaves to the water droplets and bits of colored twine, this tag is jam packed with fall goodness. It’s like taking a scenic trip through the beautiful fall forests of Maine and the rest of the northeast.

  1. Very cool! I don’t do mixed media but I found it fascinating to watch you work and to see mediums I am not familiar with. Your project is beautiful!

  2. What a fabulous fall decor piece! Like the commenter above, I don’t do mixed media but I sure like your project. The oxidized copper on the oak leaves is too cool. Like how you incorporated the lue lagoon and copper colored gauze and the twine. Lots of work but the results are worth each minute you spent. Just realized this post is from 12/2020.

    • Thanks Linda! It’s one of my favorites! As for it being from 2020 – that’s the great thing about art – it is relevant over time, so it doesn’t matter when it was made!
