Transform a Sheet of Flowers Into Cards

Are you ready for a new Sketch Starter? As you might know, as a Design Team Member for Altenew, I create monthly inspiration projects that feature two distinctly different projects using the same sketch. I encourage you to give the sketch a try and share your results on social media (tag me @nicolewattcreates).

sketch rewind

For this video, I revisited some old sketches to create a handful of cards. My focus was more on creating a whole sheet of colored flowers that coordinated and then using them all up in a series of designs. The resulting cards could be given away individually or packaged together as a card set for a gift!

The entire set focuses on the Wild & Free stamp set, Celebrate 6×6 paper and Altenew Artist Markers.

calling up some contrast

When I dropped the video for these projects on the Altenew channel, one of the viewers asked why I used blue flowers as she didn’t see them at all in the background colors and it was jarring to her. Well, the answer is simple! Blue is a contrasting color to orange. That means that it falls opposite orange on the color wheel. These colors are meant to be “jarring”. But, if used in judicious amounts, the contrasting color can really pop in a design and draw the viewer’s eye. In this case, it draws you right to the sentiment that’s placed over top. The inspiration for the layout here is Sketch #6 – just on a bit of a smaller scale. I really loved the projects I did for Sketch #6, so you should definitely check those out!

tiny tidbits

Even the tiniest of blooms from the set couldn’t escape use! I pulled up sketch #8 which was the perfect inspiration to add in three, small, evenly spaced items. These. Are. So. Cute! instead of running line through, I popped the large sentiment above (see – big sentiment, juxtaposes well with small imagery) and used another piece of the Celebrate paper to fill up that wide expanse of whitespace.

other creations

I created three additional projects with the rest of the flowers and the Celebrate paper pack. This first one was from Sketch #13

This one was based on Sketch #14

This last one was based on Sketch #16
