Sketch Starter: Beach Inspired

It’s time for another Sketch Starter! Are you ready?

As you might know, as a Design Team Member for Altenew, I create monthly inspiration projects that feature two distinctly different projects using the same sketch. I encourage you to give the sketch a try and share your results on social media (tag me @nicolewattcreates), or if you’re a class member here on NWC, upload a project to the comments below!

sketch #03

I’m back with another Sketch Starter for you. This time, I’m using not only the sketch, but also the April Inspiration Challenge from Altenew. I’m the challenge host this month, so I have an inspiration photo, color palette and the sketch for you to use!

Feel free to pin this image on Pinterest for future reference!

Make a rock background

I was so excited to put this all together! I love the inspiration photo – it was from a vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii. I knew I would create an alcohol ink background to mimic the rock look. I used the Warm Gray ink refill set, along with some Platinum embossing powder.

I used the 36 Pan Watercolor set to color in the Floral Sprig stamp set. Then I fussy cut it out and created an arrangement with the three blooms – tied off with some twine. To complete the sketch, I used a die from Crystal Frames to cut out the center.

Another Tropical Look

For the second take on the sketch, I took lots of liberties, focusing just on the circular shape in the center. I used Cotton Candy and Peach Perfect Artist Marker refills to paint the circle shape in the center.

I pulled in the gray with some Pale Gray cardstock and some shading on the Floral Sprig with a Limestone Artist Marker. I added in the sentiment and popped up the floral piece. This one came together real fast!

  1. two fantastic cards, Nicole – wonderful inspiration – have never tried alcohol inks on regular cardstock – must have a go at that!
