Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Mixed Media Tag

Hello mixed media — where have you been hiding? I dabbled in the world the tiniest bit years back, and now I’m wondering why I ever left! This was my first foray back into the craft, and I am IN LOVE! So, be prepared to see more of this stuff, and a little less on the cardmaking. Don’t worry though! The techniques are very interchangeable, and I’ll still be using lots of ink and stamps and paper!

ink, ink and more ink (and other mediums too)

Seriously, I used all sorts of inks, glazes, pastes and other mediums to create this thickboard tag. The final size on the tag is about 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. It will make a nice addition to my Halloween/ Día de los Muertos home decor. As I don’t have a reason to send out Halloween cards, and this year I’m not doing any kind of special treat bags for the neighbors, this seemed like the perfect project!

sugar skull printable

The focal point sugar skull is a printable that I found on Creative Fabrica. A quick search brought up a lot of Halloween and Día de los Muertos imagery and illustrations that I could use as a base for a project. Using a printable means that I was able to resize the image in any way I needed, and then I was able to print it out on watercolor cardstock. I found that 140LB watercolor paper would go through the manual feed on my laser printer – so, give different paper thicknesses a test run to see what works best for you and your printer.

She was painted with Memento inks as watercolors, and then I added in some MBoss in New Year’s Eve to highlight parts of the design.

The thickboard and floral elements were colored with the new Staz-on colors, and then embellished with Creative Medium, Studio Glazes and IrRESISTible pico embellisher.
