It’s time to chillax with some coloring!
I took my project over the top today with a combination of Copic and Polychromos pencil coloring. I am not embarassed to say that the elements took me about 90 minutes to color. And I was a-ok with that! Sometimes it’s a nice thing to get lost in art and coloring and a process that can get you to focus so intently, that everything else just melts away. It’s called stress relief, and you should try it!

Class #9: Seasonal Scene Building
I’ve been holding off on this class because I knew it would take some time. I wanted to have some time to explore possible stamp sets and to mess around with coloring techniques, and fail a few times if necessary. The class itself is a good one! The six lessons are packed full of great ideas, technique guidance and fantastic samples. It’s one I highly recommend – especially if you have troubles putting together a cohesive grouping of images to create a “scene”.
My Project
I fell in love with the Garden Grow stamp set the minute I saw it. I’ve been coloring it with Copics and Polychromos, but I know that there’s some watercoloring in it’s future too!

The Technique & Design
I started off by stamping the entire stamp set on some Neenah Solar White (80#) as I wasn’t sure what images I would use in the end. Then, I decided on a bright, primary color palette – red, yellow, blue – to be accented by a combination of both gray and brown neutrals. Then, the coloring began. I work out the basic shading (only 2 or three colors) using Copics, then work in the rest of the detail with Polychromo pencils.
Once the coloring was finished, I carefully diecut the pieces. This step cannot be understated. You MUST be careful to not ruin all the hard work from coloring by mis-aligning the dies! I used lots of Post-its to make sure none of the dies moved!
