How about some inspiration for the weekend?
It’s another Altenew Sketch Starter with Nicole. I really liked this duo! I took the sketch which indicates multiple layers, and turned it into some really stunning single-layer designs. I encourage you to give the sketch a try and share your results on social media (tag me @nicolewattcreates), or if you’re a class member here on NWC, upload a project to the comments below!

watercolor layers
For my first take, I had some fun with layering watercolors. I love the stained glass effect that happens when the technique is done successfully. The secret is to start with the bottom layer and make sure each layer is dry before adding the next. When you start in on the second and third layers, add in the parts that don’t overlap first, then work in the layered portion, being careful not to let the inks mingle until you’re ready to create a blended edge.
I went for the Watercolor Essential pan set as the colors I wanted to use are generally pretty light in this palette. That way, I was sure to not get too heavy with the color, which really helped with giving that transparent, glassy look.
The slimline style is great for the Script Words 2 dies – it’s like the two were meant to be!

washi for the win
For the second take, I went for an even more unlikely idea – using washi tape to create the three layered shapes. But, similar to the watercolor, since the tape is semi-opaque, you can see how the layering creates different shades. And, since the Sweet Dreams Washi Set comes in four shades, I could block off each shape pretty easily. Can you see the sketch in the final design?
I pulled in another Script Words 2 die, but wanted to pair it with another sentiment, so I chopped off the “s” to make it work!
Both of the smaller stamped sentiments comes from the You & Me mini stamp set. It’s a wonderful addition to any stash!

I have had watercolour paints for a while now but have been intimidated to use them. This I think I can do! I will have to dig them out and give them a try! I really like both of these cards ?
I’ve been wanting to make slimline cards. This will push me and my creativity.
