You don’t need much to achieve great results. In fact, you don’t need anything special! Of course, if you need to do some shopping, I always have supplies linked below and at the end of the post. - Dies
- Cardstock
- Water Spray Bottle
- Embossing & Die Cut Machine including the Rubber embossing mat and any other special shims for your specific machine.

steps to dry emboss with dies
- Refer to your diecutting machine manufacturer recommended sandwich for embossing with dies.
- Spray cardstock with water before applying the die to the paper.
- The die will be applied to the paper just as if you are going to cut it. However, using the specific shim sandwich for your machine will keep the die from cutting and only create an embossed image.

Thank you Nicole for demonstrating this technique. I have tried to find a sandwich that works on both of my machines (different brands) but haven’t gotten there yet. I am so glad to know to spritz my paper with a mist of water. I did have my paper crack. I am wondering… do you have a sandwich figured out for the Tim Holtz Vagabond electric die cutting machine or for the Stampin’ Up Cut and Emboss? I also have an old Cuttlebug I could try. If you know the sandwich for even one of these machines, I would be so grateful if you could share it. Thank you again for the great tutorial! I would love to figure out how to do this. 🙂
Hi Taleena! Glad I could help out a bit. I don’t have either of those machines, so I can’t be much help there. I do know that every individual machine has a slight difference in pressure, so you usually have to play around with shims and plates to get what works exactly for your machine. I even mix & match cutting plates from different companies. For example, I use a Gemini Jr. diecutting machine. Instead of using both Gemini clear acrylic plates, I use one Gemini and one Sizzix Big Shot plate (slightly thinner) for most of my work because two Gemini plates is most times, too thick!
