Love dimension, hate extra postage?
Don’t we all! Today’s project will share a way that you can add your own hand-drawn dimension to a single layer that makes it really pop off the page! Sound difficult? It’s really not hard or time consuming. In fact, you might find that it’s something that you really enjoy doing! I think of it like coloring – it’s a very relaxing technique.

My Project
I’ve seen this border style stamping a lot lately. I see something in the style on Instagram probably daily! It’s not a difficult technique, and really just requires some center masking and stamps that you can add to the top and/or bottom of the masked area. Sometimes faux dimension is added, sometimes not. So, if you want a super quick card, leave off the graphite shading and you’re done!

The Technique & Design
Isn’t that so cool how just a little shading can create this optical illusion? If you’ve never thought about adding your own shading to a stamped design, I encourage you to give it a try! You don’t need to have special graphite pencils – a regular #2 pencil will to to start. Instead of blending stumps, you can use a bit of paper toweling on your finger to blend out the pencil, though, a pack of blending stumps (also called tortillon) are really inexpensive and will give you better blending results.
The other key to this project is using Distress Oxide inks. Their unique properties as pigment inks mean that the ink sits on the surface instead of soaking into the paper like dye ink does. That means that the ink color will stay true on colored paper. That’s how you can get a bold color on kraft paper using something other than black!
